The Southern Exposures Tourism Tabloid and webpage is created annually by a group of dedicated volunteers from across southern Iowa.  Southern Exposures Tourism formed in 1988 to create a tourism committee.  Their goal, "To promote beautiful southern Iowa." The Southern Iowa 9, as the 9-county group called themselves, believed in the future of southern Iowa and in February of 1992, they published 50,000 copies of a tabloid to promote their belief.

Southern Iowa 9 was awarded the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award in 1991 for their work in promoting Iowa. By 1993, the group had grown from the original 9 counties to 12!  A name change was in order.  The Southern Iowa 9 became Southern Exposures Tourism and has remained so since.

Over the years, the volunteer organization has continued to publish and distribute the annual tabloid at travel shows, the Iowa State Fair, and locally throughout the participating counties. Events, festivals and celebrations are listed in the Calendar of Events, while individual activities and tourist attractions are shown in editorials throughout the tabloid.
