Historic Oak Seminary invites public use

Built in 1859 by A. W. Moffit, Oak Seminary is a one-room school house three miles east of Pleasanton, Iowa. Recorded in the diaries of former teachers and students, its name reflects a program established in the east to train and send young women to the frontier as missionary teachers. Oak Seminary served as a public school until the mid 1950s. Some of its teachers and students still live in the area.

Oak Seminary was once part of what was called Lapland and is not too far from the site of the Honey Tree War battlefield. It is also close to the Hamilton Cemetery, where slaves brought to Iowa by the Hamilton family are buried.

Refurbished as a puppet theater, Oak Seminary is part of a conference/retreat center that hosts family reunions, weddings, receptions,  Red Hat Events, and business retreats. It is open from April 1 through October 31.  To make reservations or for more information, contact Kay Herring at 6980 County Highway J66, Davis City, Iowa 50065.  She may also be reached at (641)442-2701 or at ondinonk@grm.net.
